Feb. 11/2: Popup at Warkop in Manhattan

A new menu item! Nasiku, which is short for Nasi Kucing, or Rice Cat, is a little fun-sized packet of rice with a surprise food friend inside. We’ll be serving Nasiku Sambal Tuna and Nasiku Tempe Kering on Feb. 11/12 at Warkop in Hell’s Kitchen!

We are back! This time we are popping up in Hell’s Kitchen at the venerable Warkop, an Indonesian noodle and coffee shop equally beloved by Indonesians living in New York and Indonesians visiting from out of town. It’s a must stop on the Indonesian tourist trail!

So we are excited to be offering a special menu alongside Warkop’s on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 11 and 12. We’ll be serving a la carte, first-come-first-serve, starting at 11:30 am and ending when we sell out. Be sure to come on the earlier side so you don’t miss out! If you do arrive too late, however, Warkop will be there for you to save the day.

We are also excited to be debuting at this popup a few new dishes we’ve never served before, including our NasiKu, or Nasi Kucing, fun-sized rice packets. Nasi Kucing means rice cat and are popular little rice snacks sold all over Indonesia. Come try them!

We're moving! Watch for news of our last Boston pop up

Retno and Pete at a recent pop up at Mamaleh’s. Photo Credit: Nina Gallant.

It was five years ago — June 3, 2014 — that Kaki Lima held its first pop up. We set up on the patio at KO Pies in the East Boston Shipyard on a pleasant Tuesday evening.

It was total chaos. Most notably: We didn’t hire a dishwasher. “We can do that ourselves and save some money,” we thought. We never made that mistake again, at least intentionally.

About 40 people came to that dinner, mostly friends and family. Since then we’ve held countless sold out pop ups in Boston and Cambridge. We also popped up in New York, both Portlands, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Austin and elsewhere. We served meals for between 30 and 200 people. We held residencies at both KO Pies and Wink & Nod. We won ‘Best of Boston’ awards from Boston Magazine and the Improper Bostonian. We spent six months traveling and researching all across Indonesia. The New York Times featured Kaki Lima on the front page of its Food section, calling us “champions of Indonesian culture.”

Five years later, it is now time for Kaki Lima’s next adventure. We will be reluctantly giving up our community of support here in Boston and moving to New York, where Pete will re-enter the journalism world as an editor for the digital news company Quartz. And Retno will continue to nurture Kaki Lima in the same way she did in Boston. We’ll be in a different city, but the mission will remain the same: To introduce high-end Indonesian cuisine to an American audience. While we are excited for our move, it is bittersweet: We are super sad to say goodbye to our Boston community.

In these five years in Boston, we’ve meandered through an industry populated by some amazing and hard-working people. We’ve seen firsthand how challenging it is to make this kind of business work here. And we marvel at the generosity offered by the Boston restaurant community. While many people are in part responsible for our success here, we in particular want to thank Sam Jackson of KO Pies, who launched us on this journey and carried us through it to this very day; Mark O’Leary, who with great humor helped us through some of our most challenging days; the entire team at Mamaleh’s and State Park, which gave Retno her start in the industry here and have been a rock of support ever since; Patrick Enage of Akinto, who managed to somehow triple our productivity with all his tricks; the entire staff at Wink & Nod and KO Pies; Tom and Mariah Pisha-Duffly, who invited us to the Honey Paw so long ago for our first out-of-state pop up and have been our friends and inspiration ever since; Meg Tobin, who generously relieved us of having to make desserts; and Nick Dynan, who better take our secrets to his grave.

We will officially make the move to New York sometime in June. In the meantime, place your last catering orders now. And stay tuned for news of our last pop up series in Boston (for now).

Kaki Lima Is Going On Tour!

West Coast Pop Up Tour Poster Lo-Res copy.jpg

We are headed West!

Kaki Lima will collaborate with a bunch of young and awesome chefs — all with their own unique Indonesian heritage — on the West Coast this fall, and we are super excited! These guys are all an important part of the growing Indonesian Food Movement!

Han Oak.jpg

Our first stop: Portland, Oregon. We are teaming up with Gado Gado PDX on Oct. 18 for an elaborate meal all cooked in front of guests over a backyard open-pit fire! This pop up will be held at Portland's much-talked about Han Oak. The team behind Gado Gado PDX is Thomas and Mariah Pisha-Duffly, which some of you might remember. We've worked with them twice before — once at The Honey Paw in Portland, Maine and once at KO Pies in the Shipyard in Boston. Our collaborations are always super fun and amazing.

To buy tickets to our Portland event, click here.  **SOLD OUT!**

Siska-Photo.jpg

Our second stop: San Francisco, California. This event is a long time coming! We will join ChiliCali, aka Siska Marcus, the Indonesian pop up queen of the West Coast, at her spot on Nov. 5 for a flavor-packed seafood feast! Chef Siska has been wowing the Bay Area with her pop ups for several years. She has also recently launched a line of Indonesian sauces. Check. Them. Out. And then tell your friends about what will be an historic and delicious event. The coastal Indonesian food movements will finally unite, for one night only! Tickets for this one will go on sale very shortly. Stay tuned!

To buy tickets to the 5:30 seating on Nov. 5, click here. To buy tickets to the 9 p.m. seating, click here. **SOLD OUT**

Screen Shot 2017-10-01 at 1.07.40 PM.png

Our final stop: Los Angeles, California. We are honored to work with Erwin and Eric Tjahyadi, the Indonesian-American brothers behind LA's trend-setting Komodo empire, for two show-stopping pop ups. These guys are blowing up in Los Angeles. Chef Erwin's original Asian fusion dishes have been featured in every media imaginable. And now they've opened Bone Kettle to rave reviews. On Nov. 20 and 21, we will be joining them at Bone Kettle for two dinners. This is a collision of superstars. Don't miss it! Reserve your ticket here!

Our July pop up at Tavern Road.

We are headed back to the glorious Tavern Road in Boston's Fort Point neighborhood on Sunday, Nov. 6, for another epic meal. For this one we are super excited to again team up with Tenzin Samdo, the wunderkind bartender of Tavern Road, who will be creating a specially-designed and Indonesian-inspired cocktail menu to accompany the dinner. We will be opening the bar at 6 p.m. this time. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

And that's not at all! We are also teaming up with the inimitable Jacqueline Dole of the Parlor Ice Cream Co., who will be serving an Indonesia-inspired ice cream for dessert. Amazing cocktails and amazing ice cream? Need we say more?

Oct. 2: We will be at CREATE Boston

Join us in the Boston Seaport for the CREATE Boston festival on Oct. 2! We will be GRILLING from 2 to 5 p.m.!

CREATE Boston is a celebration of art, food, drink and music by our friend Louis DiBicarri, owner and chef of Tavern Road. There will be a bunch of different chefs, bartenders and artists. And all of it is available with the price of entry. Here's how the organizers describe it:

"The festival draws inspiration from Chef DiBiccari’s strong ties to the local artistic community, and aims to showcase homegrown talent. CREATE both locates and celebrates nascent talent, pairing upcoming artists with the next wave of the city’s great chefs. You may not know their names, and in many ways you’re not supposed to. The point is that you won’t be able to forget them after seeing and tasting their work."

We like to think the line about the "next wave of the city's great chefs" is a about us (well, about Retno at least). Get your tickets here! And get them fast because space will fill up quick!!

Your chances are running out!

Hi all!

We only have two more days at KO Pies in the East Boston Shipyard before we take a little break to do some other events. So be sure to come on down TOMORROW AND TUESDAY from 5 to 9 p.m. After that we will be closed at KO until February!

If you haven't tried our current menu, make sure to stop by. It will be different when we come back in February. We will be holding some pop up events in the meantime, in Boston and elsewhere. So be sure to follow us on Facebook or check our website for updates on those.

If you've made it down to the Shipyard and had a good time, please take a minute and leave us a spectacular review on our Facebook page. Reviews make a difference! And they make us feel good about ourselves, which is really what this is all about.

THANK YOU!

Cheers!
Retno and Pete

Oct. 19: We will be opening twice a week in the East Boston Shipyard

It's true! Here is the press release:

EAST BOSTON, Mass. — That inscrutable and wedded duo behind Kaki Lima Boston will soon take their next step toward culinary infamy. The rumors are true. On Oct. 19, Kaki Lima will begin a residency at KO Pies in the East Boston Shipyard. Call it KL@KO.

Chef Retno Pratiwi and her tireless husband Peter Gelling will be serving their wildly popular Indonesian fare twice a week — Mondays and Tuesdays (when KO is typically closed) — at KO Pies in the East Boston Shipyard (256 Marginal St.). KO's usual beer and wine selections will also be available.

“We've been working with Sam Jackson at KO Pies now for well over a year, holding our popular pop up dinner series. And now Sam is generously giving us the opportunity to take our restaurant education to the next level,” says Kaki Lima Boston co-owner Peter Gelling.

The menu — which is still being finalized — will include some of Kaki Lima Boston's most popular dishes. The always-diffident Chef Retno said she hopes people will like it. “I will do my best,” she said. “I'm so grateful for the opportunity. This will be such a good learning experience for us as we work toward opening our own restaurant space in Boston.”

Kaki Lima Boston will continue to hold pop up dinners at venues around the city, where they will be experimenting with new recipes, some fusion dishes, and other items, as they perfect a final menu for their future restaurant.

“The restaurant industry is not an easy one. So we've opted to take it slow, to make sure we are ready — that we have the right experience and the resources to help ensure success — before we open our own place,” Gelling said. “KL@KO is the next step — maybe one of the final steps — in this process.”

Sept. 26: Block Party with East Meets West!

The founder of EMW is one of our oldest friends! And EMW was an early supporter of Kaki Lima Boston. Now they are holding a giant party and fundraiser in Somerville. We are going to be there cooking and it's going to be EPIC.

For those that don't know: EMW’s mission is to empower individuals and communities to realize their human potential through the transformative power of artistic expression. Here's some details about the event:

From noon 'til midnight, EMW is bringing together its family of artists, musicians, technologists, chefs and activists from all across the world to celebrate those who call EMW Bookstore on Mass Ave a second home. Block Party offers both FREE day programs opened to the public and a ticketed evening showcase; events will range from electronic music to beatboxing; spoken word performances to tech talks; a silent auction to community biology demonstrations. Your contribution helps EMW Bookstore produce a year of community programming. Help us make our goal of raising $15k by contributing or purchasing tickets below. More information here!

Check this space for details about what we will be serving during the event. We hope to see you there! And please support EMW! They do amazing work. And they are amazing people.
